Abstract
Highlights •Non-leaching pillared clays with tunable points of zero charge and adjustable basal spacing.•Intensification of polycation preparation, intercalation and desorption using ultrasound.•Environmentally friendly synthesis, with recycle and reuse of spent polycation solution.•Optimum conditions for adsorption of anionic and cationic dyes identified.•Pillared clay with adsorbed Acid Blue 74 dye could still adsorb Basic Orange 2 dye.
