@@@@Highlights •There was a significant association between SES, chronic stress, and the incidence of AF in 122,494 older participants.•Low SES and high chronic stress were independently associated with an increased risk of developing AF.•Chronic stress was identified as a mediator of the relationship between SES and AF.•We found that the risk of developing AF was highest in participants with low SES and high chronic stress.
