Abstract
Highlights •Shale gas extraction induced earthquakes may not cause large-scale methane leaks.•The seismogenic fault, which was ruptured by the Luxian earthquake, did not result in shale gas leakage.•Induced earthquakes will not cause additional large-scale leaks from existing active faults in the surrounding area.•The occurrence of Luxian earthquake was induced by long-term wastewater injection and short-term hydraulic fracturing.
