@@@@Highlights •Reducing the channel height by half improved salt migration in EDBC by 11.1 %.•Osmotic water transport during batch operation increases energy consumption and levelized salt cost.•Semi-batch optimization reduces energy consumption to 0.53 kWh/kg and $4.40/kg for 200 g/L brine.•Full-scale EDBC produces 200 g/L brine with 0.18 kWh/kg energy use and $0.86/kg cost in single-pass configuration.•At full scale, EDBC is more cost- and energy-efficient than existing membrane or thermal brine concentrator systems.
