Abstract
The article discusses an archaeological study of Paleolithic cave art using uranium-series (U-series) dating. Researchers note the exceptional archive of early human symbolic behavior that Paleolithic cave art provides, adding that obtaining reliable dates has been difficult and that its chronology remains poorly understood despite more than a century of study. Topics include an overview of U-series disequilibrium dates of calcite deposits overlying or underlying art found in 11 caves, including the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage sites of Altamira, El Castillo, and Tito Bustillo, Spain, the tradition of decorating caves, and what the age of the art reveals about the culture of the first modern humans in Europe.
