Abstract
The article discusses forms of payment for archaic Greek mercenaries, or "mercenariat" working in the eastern Mediterranean, including under Egyptian pharoahs, in the archaic period. The author uses evidence from sites in the Near East and Greek literature to explore payment methods of Greek mercenaries, suggesting that they were paid under established systems of plunder, precious metals such as "hacksilber," and land. Also discussed it the introduction of coinage for the payment of mercenaries.
