Abstract
The article discusses the history of theological and biblical concepts related to corporal punishment in Catholic Anglo-Saxon education in 10th century England. The article describes the descriptions of corporal punishment in such writings as "Colloquy" by Ælric, "Regula Sancti Benedicti" by Æthelwold, and "Lives of Saints" by Ælfric, exploring the ways in which they influence Christian Anglo-Saxon educators in the use of flogging, paddling, and punching as disciplinary measures in education. Other subjects under discussion include the Fatherhood of God in relation to fatherly chastisement and rebuke, the responsibility of abbots to use discipline, and the influence of Benedictine monastic reforms on spreading ideologies of corporal punishment throughout Anglo-Saxon education.
