Abstract
The article examines the vigilance, commitment, and action needed by all global stakeholders to reduce the potential impact of pandemic influenza during the Hajj pilgrimage. The Hajj pilgrimage is annual event involving more than 2 million pilgrims, from hundreds of countries, who travel to Mecca in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). An overview of a meeting between the KSA and the World Health Organization (WHO) is presented. Topics include an overview of disease outbreaks during Hajj pilgrimages, the global health challenges the pilgrimage presents, and the feasibility of the recommendations made to mitigate the effects of the H1N1 influenza A pandemic during the KSA-WHO meeting.
