Abstract
The article discusses the royal commissioning by King Louis the 15th in 1753 of French artist Claude Joseph Vernet to paint a series of detailed views of French seaports. The work entailed more than ten years, in the course of which Vernet completed over 60 paintings, including views of such ports as Marseilles, Toulon, the Antibes, Bandol, and Sète, as well as several Atlantic coastal ports. The series of works titled "Ports de France" is said to be a culmination in the Italian tradition of "vedute" which emphasizes the grandeur and wealth of the seaports.
