Abstract
The article discusses the court case Simon, A Slave v. The State of Florida wherein Simon died in prison after the Florida Supreme Court reversed his criminal conviction for arson in February 1854. Topics discussed include the arrest of Simon that was ordered by Pensacola Mayor Joseph Sierra, the lack of constitutional protection for enslaved Floridians, and the yellow fever epidemic that occurred in Pensacola.
