Abstract
Graffiti is a pervasive symbolic communication experience around the globe. It often seems to be an incomprehensible language that only the insider can decode. We argue that this is not the case; in fact, graffiti is a hybrid merger of two elements of a communication process--content and message. Just as McLuhan merged channel (media) and message for the media era claiming that the media is the message, we claim that the context is the message. We draw upon Burke's concept of the negative and Foucault's notion of power to round out our interpretation of graffiti as a communication phenomenon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
