Abstract
This chapter outlines the political developments in the Dominican Republic and in the U.S. that serve as the backdrop to migration trends and Dominican-American community building and political participation in the U.S. It provides a brief sketch of the history that shaped the Dominicans' exodus from their home country to the streets of New York City. It also describes the ideology that redirected Dominican organizing in New York City and their development of an important form of politics.
