Abstract
The observed properties of active galactic nuclei are briefly summarized. The broad features of the observations are discussed in terms of a model incorporating a massive central black hole. The properties of the extended radio jets are also described and interpreted in terms of simple kinematical models. Models for the collimation of jets are outlined with particular attention being paid to hydromagnetic models. Recent work on the electromagnetic extraction of energy from a spinning black hole is mentioned
