Abstract
This chapter highlights common situations in which a family dispute resolution (FDR) professional might be obligated to follow a variety of different guidelines, standards, or rules simultaneously. It notes that there is an increased risk of facing an ethical dilemma arising because of conflicts between the different guidelines, standards, and rules. The chapter provides definitions for guidelines, rules, and standards and notes ways in which they can lead to conflicting guidance regarding specific professional behavior. It offers a brief primer on ethics, including underlying philosophical principles and application of ethical theory. A specific scenario is presented that provides a model for decision-making that FDR professionals can use when facing an ethical dilemma.
