Abstract
American, 20th – 21st century, male. Born 19 September 1962, in Boulder (Colorado). Painter. Figure compositions, figures, portraits. John Currin obtained a BFA from the Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, in 1984, and an MFA from Yale University in 1986. He is married to the sculptor, Rachel Feinstein, and works in New York City. Currin, who calls his work 'art for dummies', cites the influence of Botticelli, Bruegel, Van Gogh and Picasso, as well as the German artists Cranach and Grünewald. His style of painting figures, often described as kitsch, was dismissed early in his career as 'bad art'. Currin, however, has since developed a reputation for offbeat subject matter and excellent technique, his tonal palette recalling the work of Camille Corot....
