Abstract
The UK has a complex collection of acts and guidance under constant revision covering child protection rather than a single law. As a result, health professionals and the general public may be confused as to what constitutes child abuse, particularly physical abuse. The variation in legislation for England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland is discussed, as well as gaps in the law such as the minimum age for a babysitter and at what age a child can be left alone. The cases presented have been chosen to cover the current laws relating to children as well as to highlight common legal and ethical dilemmas that are often faced in child protection work.
