Abstract
Background. Localized early hilar lung cancers less than 1 cm in diameter have been reported in some articles, however previous reports have not been enough to establish standard therapy. Case. A 64-year-old man presented with an abnormal shadow on annual chest X-ray examination. The X-ray film showed a 2.9cm×2.5cm nodule in the right S^1a. Bronchoscopic biopsy revealed it to be a poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. Meanwhile, a 2-3 mm small white nodular lesion was detected on the surface of the bifurcation between right B^1a and B^1b. Transbronchial biopsy disclosed that the tumor was squamous cell carcinoma in situ. Therefore , this patient was diagnosed presenting multiple lung cancer. Pathological investigation of the surgical specimen of the right upper lobe did not show any cancer cells at the bifurcation after forceps resection. Conclusion . Some small hilar lung carcinomas in situ can be totally resected by standard forceps biopsy. (JJSB. 2004;26:357-360)
