Abstract
Research on the encounter distance for the ultra-fast reactions of the hydrated electron with strongly oxidizing agents proposes a model to explain the mechanism of the reaction of the hydrated electron with strongly oxidizing inorganic oxo compounds. The model is based on photochemical studies of aqueous solutions of the oxyanions O3- and ClO3- that imply that solvation of the photoproduct O- precedes cage-back reactions. Experimental methodology and findings are discussed.
