Abstract
In situ hybridization of odorant receptor mRNAs with five receptor probes indicates the convergence of axons from the receptor neurons on olfactory bulb glomeruli. The glomeruli are located in a bilaterally symmetric fashion and the distribution is constant for individuals of the same species. A model of olfactory coding with a odor quality distinction arising from the identification of distinct spatial distribution of glomerular activity is proposed.
