Abstract
This review discuses the formation and propagation of biofilms, which are assemblages of microorganisms and their extracellular products attached to an abiotic or biotic surface. Data on the composition, structure and function, acquisition of genetic traits, and ecological significance of biofilms and molecular genetics of oral biofilms are presented.
