Abstract
Simple substitution reactions enable the preparation of fluoro-substituted bis(salicylaldehyde) ethylenediimine (Salen) complexes of copper(II), nickel(II) and oxovanadium(IV). Fluoro substitution significantly influences the packing and mesogenic properties of metallomesogens. Substitution of CH2 for the alkoxy O atom in Ni(5-(hexyloxy)Salen) induces significant structural change from roughly planar to an irregular S-shape. X-ray studies help determine the crystal structure of the mesogen Ni(5-hexylSalen).
