Abstract
VANET is advancing the areas of its domain enabling vehicles with sensors and actuators to communicate and exchange data, hence attracting more and more applications to be developed in its platform. VANET in its decentralized architecture is mainly depending on two modes of communication, which is Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Roadside Unit (V2R). Operating mainly on WAVE IEEE802.11p, V2V and V2R are utilized to support communication and data delivery of long-range communication of Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) operations. However, due to the nature of vehicular traffic which mainly involves in dynamic density and velocity of vehicles, both communications are susceptible to many limiting factors, limiting it to operate at an optimum level. This paper investigates and analyzes the performance of V2V and V2R communication in VANET environment simulating a small-scaled area of the Federal Highway, Malaysia. Results revealed a comparison analysis of both V2V and V2R communication in dynamic density and velocity levels measured in packet loss ratio and network throughput.
