Abstract
Al-Cu alloys are long time known and their manufacturing as well as processing is widely controllable. Because of decreasing formability with increasing the copper content, the copper concentration of today's cast Al-Cu alloys is limited about 5–6 wt.-%. In contrast to casting spray forming leads to a fine-grained microstructure. Therefore spray formed Al-Cu alloys with Cu contents far in excess of the solution limit (5,7 wt.-%) can be produced with an excellent forming behaviour.
In order to improve the quasi-static behaviour of spray formed Al-Cu alloys investigations on the binary alloy AlCu10 were done with focus on optimal forming parameters regarding their adjustment to the microstructure after spray forming. The optimised forming leads to isotropic mechanical properties. Furthermore exceeded elongation values could be achieved which reach the level of conventional alloys like AA 2014 or AA2024. The results show that spray forming is more than an alternative to produce high copper containing Al alloys with excellent plasticity as well as superior properties for relevant semi finished parts.
