Abstract
Pediatrician Roy-Bornstein, whose writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, and other venues, offers an empowering, impactful story of her family's unique journey through mental illness. Although the circumstances of the main characters in this story are not the norm, the realities of helping young women through severe mental health issues, including anorexia, depression, and self-harming behaviors, are relatable for many families struggling with these issues on a daily basis. Told from the perspective of someone trained in working with children and teenagers, this story is eye-opening. Readers come to realize that even a trained medical professional felt unprepared and lost during this treatment and recovery process. Roy-Bornstein's story is relatable in many ways; it is especially inspiring to read about a family willing to foster young women and fight for them (and with them), despite the numerous mental health challenges presented. Though many people would have turned their backs on these girls, the Bornstein family kept trekking through the unknown, unwavering in its commitment. This book provides significant insight into the love, strength, and mental fortitude required if one is to assist others with mental health issues. It provides a great reminder to always fight for the ones you love. Summing Up: Recommended. All readers.
