Abstract
Background/Purpose: Menopausal women experience hormonal changes that can result in symptoms such as menstrual irregularities, vaginal dryness, hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, and more. If menopausal symptoms are not properly addressed, they can significantly affect the quality of life (QOL) of menopausal women. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness therapy in reducing menopausal symptoms and improving the QOL among menopausal women. Method: A comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed, Embase, Medline, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL databases. The methodological quality was assessed using version 2 of the Cochrane risk of bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2). Additionally, Comprehensive Meta-Analysis version 2.0 was used to conduct the meta-analysis. Result: A total of seven randomized controlled trials involving 628 menopausal women were included in this meta-analysis. Fixed-effect model for meta-analysis revealed that mindfulness therapy had significant effects on menopausal symptoms (SMD = -0.29, 95% CI: [-0.50, -0.08], p = .01). Random-effects model for meta-analysis revealed that mindfulness therapy had significant effects on QOL immediately after the intervention (SMD = -1.70, 95% CI: [-2.54, -0.85], p < .001) and during follow-up (SMD = -1.92, 95% CI: [-3.03, -0.81], p = .001). Conclusion/Implication: This study demonstrated that mindfulness therapy was beneficial in reducing menopausal symptoms and improving the QOL among menopausal women, promoting self-management skills with positive attitudes and perceptions towards menopause. However, there was high heterogeneity in the pooling study results in this meta-analysis, and the results should be interpreted carefully. Further research is needed to gather more evidence and clarify the effects of mindfulness therapy on menopausal symptoms and QOL.
