This paper studies the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) for reconstruction of second-order satellite control points in the Taidong area. Four reconstruction test modes were conducted: (1) only use the surrounding first-order satellite control points; (2) only use the adjacent second-order control points; (3) use all of the surrounding and adjacent second-order control points; (4) use all of the surrounding and adjacent second-order control points plus surrounding first-order control points. Experimental results from the four different reconstruction processes are compared, and no significant differences in horizontal coordinates are found. In conclusion, it is recommended that the reconstruction procedure (2) to be used in Taiwan for its capability to effectively reduce the cost of field surveying as well as maintain the quality of the reconstruction mission
