Abstract
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) continues to cause significant morbidity and mortality in the newborn period. The mortality rate among severe NEC patients requiring surgery is over 50 %. The capacity of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) for self-replication, differentiation, preventing apoptosis, and reducing inflammation has caused an interest for their use in NEC therapy. Here we present an infant treated with human umbilical cord-derived MSC transplantation 30 days after undergoing surgery for extensive fulminant NEC.
