Abstract
The article features the late Victorian artist Evelyn Pickering De Morgan and her emphasis on the theme of death in her works. It focuses on the painting "The Wandering Jew." The progress of the soul through developmental stages from the embodied life into the afterlife was represented by De Morgan in allegorical and historical images. Death was explicitly addressed in her early works including "The Angel of Death," "The Valley of Shadows," and "The Wandering Jew." According to the article, the legend of the Wandering Jew persisted into the 19th century, but it began to develop greater resonance and complexity with the new interest of Romantic poets and artists.
