Abstract
Nitramine-octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7, or HMX is a commonly used secondary solid high explosive. HMX has four different stable polymorphs, each of which has different explosive sensitivities making a detailed understanding of the HMX phase diagram important. Using X-ray diffraction we track the kinetics of phase transitions starting with the γ polymorph. Like the previously studied phase transitions of the β polymorph, a non-exponential dependence of the mole fraction versus time indicates that the kinetics are second order, suggesting a nucleation and growth mechanism.
