Abstract
This special issue highlights a pivotal set of regulatory molecules that have emerged as central controllers of cell-type identity in the immune system. Each in its own way has been considered as a kind of 'master' regulator of a particular cell fate choice, but the actual modes of action of these factors vary widely.
