Abstract
The article presents an overview of the molecular systematics of Simulium squamosum in Kinshasa, Congo based on cytotaxonomy. The study highlights the need for greater comprehensive studies involving human onchocerciasis and the Simulium squamosum vector in Central African region. The phylogenetic relationships of this vector to other potential carriers of the Simulium damnosum complex using the mitochondrial gene sequences and nuclear ribosomal-DNA ITS2 sequences of the flies are offered.
