Abstract
This article focuses on the autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune disorders afflict an estimated one in 20 Americans, but women can be 10 times more likely to develop clinical symptoms than men. The immune system normally works to defend the body against infections by identifying and eliminating invading viruses, bacteria and other disease-causing microbes. But in people with autoimmune disorders, the body turns on itself: the immune system mistakenly attacks other cells, tissues and organs.
